This is Leicestershire at its most serene, where quiet uplands shelter scattered hamlets and attractive farming villages are built of mellow brown stone. Threading the area is the tranquil towpath of a winding rural waterway leading to the charming country town of Market Harborough.

Attractive Market Harborough is a great place for shopping, with its unique specialist shops and stylish boutiques. Enjoy a stroll around the pleasant town centre, which boasts a fine medieval church, an intriguing 17th century timber grammar school on stilts and a Victorian corset factory, now home to the town’s museum. A branch of the Grand Union Canal links Market Harborough’s redeveloped canal basin with the nearby village of Foxton, famous for its impressive staircase of locks along the Grand Union Canal. Boats can be hired both at Harborough and at Foxton to explore the pretty south Leicestershire countryside.

North of Market Harborough, picturesque villages such as Hallaton and Medbourne glow when the tawny ironstone cottages bask in sunshine. These two villages are famous for their annual Bottle Kicking and Hare Pie Scrambling event; a madcap tradition that takes place each Easter Monday. Further north towards Melton, is High Leicestershire, an area where many villages were abandoned centuries ago and ancient woodland survives. This has bequeathed an openess to the hilly countryside, which is unique in Middle England. Nowhere is this more apparent than around Robin-a-Tiptoe, a lonely summit where an attempted hanging failed because of the height of the miscreant! The museums at Market Harborough and Hallaton have displays on local traditions and history.
